What would happen to society if the fiber optic cable was NOT invented?

seeing as there's speculations to fiber optics being reverse engineered by the Roswell crash. IF that were true, would our entire technological advances be the seeds of an alien race; again seeing as fiber optics are one of the key factors to establishing the SONAR, networking, telecommunications, broadcasting and even many industrial/commercial products.
